FAQ

What is the ideal nose?

The ideal nose breathes well, and is in a harmony with the rest of the face. A nose that does not fit the face by means of size and shape will definitely look fake or “done”. The ideal nose is different for every single individual.

How is a rhinoplasty operation performed?

A rhinoplasty operation is performed at hospital conditions, under general anaesthesia. Operation mainly consists of making changes in the nasal bones and cartilages which make up the shape of the nose. Generally, the steps are removing/lowering the hump, tip re-shaping, correction of the deviations, reconstituting the overall nasal alignment, opening the blocked airways and more. Since the needs of every single patient is different, the to-do-list for every nose is different as well. Details will be discussed during the consultation.

How long does a rhinoplasty operation last?

Generally 1-3 hours.

Does one need to stay at the hospital following a rhinoplasty?

Except for some very simple tip-plasties, generally one night hospital stay is required.

How long do the internal splints and the cast stay?

The silicone internal splints are removed on day 3 following surgery. The external cast which protects the nose in the early post-op, is removed on day 7.

When can I get back to my work/school/daily life? How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?

A rhinoplasty patient can get back to daily routine after having the internal splints removed 3 days after surgery, but of course avoiding any external impact on the nose. If the cast is a problem about getting back to social life, then we need to wait for a week after the date of surgery. Travelling patients are advised to stay in Istanbul for at least 7 days after surgery.

When will I be able to see my nose’s ultimate shape?

In the early post-operative period, the nose (and sometimes rest of the face) is expected to swell. By the end of the first month, majority of this swelling resolves, but the final shape needs a total of 12 months to settle.

I heard that there are open and closed rhinoplasties. Which one is better?

This is something your doctor should decide instead of yourself. All patients need different operations, and the only difference on your side between an open and a closed operation is a 3-4 mm cut across the columella, which will be invisible after a few months.

I’ve had a rhinoplasty before, but I’m not happy with the result. What should I do?

Revision rhinoplasties are a bit more tricky than primary cases. A second operation or alternative methods (fillers etc.) can be considered, but it’s very difficult to decide what to do without doing a detailed physical examination. The functional and cosmetic outcomes of the primary operation should be thoroughly discussed and evaluated, in order to decide if it’s worth it.

I don’t like my nose, but I hate those “done” noses. What can I do?

Natural look is the main rule of modern rhinoplasty concept. No one anymore likes those “done” noses that you dislike. You probably do not even realise a successfully operated nose and that’s why the “unsuccessful” results attract your attention. A good plastic surgeon has to pay attention to the natural limits of the patient, otherwise whatever change done during the procedure will be weirdly noticeable.

What is the importance of eyelid aesthetics?

Social interaction between people starts with eye contact. Our first impressions about someone are formed by his/her looks. Therefore, an impressive look has a key role in social communication.

How and why is a blepharoplasty performed?

Eyelid operations are undertaken to correct the age-related or congenital deformities of the eyelids. Most common problems corrected during a blepharoplasty are eyelid sagging, sad look, inflated/deflated eyelids, tear-trough deformity, eyelid bags and eyelid laxity. Most of the time, eyelid surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, but sometimes general anaesthesia might be required. Hospital stay is generally not required.

How long does a blepharoplasty take?

Blepharoplasty operations takes between half an hour to two hours depending on the details of the operation.

When can I get back to my work/daily life?

You can return to your daily life within a couple of days, but bruises and swelling will last for a week.

I live outside the city/country. How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?

7 Days

What are the age-related changes in the face? How do they happen?

Most common age – related changes are deepening of some previously existing lines, distortion of facial contours, jawlines and neck curves. Age – related changes are simply the deformities in facial skeleton and soft tissues due to loss of soft tissue support, and cumulative effect of gravity. As a result of deflation and loss of flexibility within the course of aging, facial structures and volume tend to shift downwards.

What are the key points of aesthetic approach to the ageing face?

The aging face is rejuvenated by dealing with each deformity separately, and finding specific solutions for every single component of the problem. Generally, facial deformities are examined in three levels: upper face, midface, and lower face. Usually all three levels are affected from the process of ageing. While planning a facelift, all three levels should be carefully diagnosed, and a harmonious change in all levels should be considered. The most important principle for a facelift to be successful, is to stick with the original anatomy of the patient instead of converting him/her to someone else. Rsted, fresher, happier, younger, but still the same person!. Just like all the other aesthetic operations, the biggest enemy of success is extremity in a facelift plan.

When do I get the results of my operation?

It takes 6 months for the healing to be completed totally.

What does a face-lift aim? What to expect?

Modern face lifting techniques aim to reposition the facial anatomic structures to their original (youth) positions, rather than just tightening the facial skin. Immediately under the skin, there is a layer of tissue called SMAS. This layer consists of fatpads, mimic muscles, suspension ligaments, and membranous structures, and the facial sagging mainly occurs in this layer. It’s impossible for a facelift to be succesful without SMAS restoration. On the other hand, the volume distribution in the face should be revised. Fat injection/removal and some implants may be used for this purpose.
